Our mission and vision
At Sri Lanka Street Dog Welfare, we are dedicated to improving the lives of street dogs in Sri Lanka. Our focus is on providing essential medical treatment, spaying services to control population, and emergency treatment. Every penny raised goes directly to helping these animals in need.
Spaying Treatments
Sri Lanka is home to a large population of free-roaming and street dogs, with estimates suggesting there are hundreds of thousands living across urban and rural communities. Without effective population management, unplanned breeding can lead to increasing numbers of puppies being born into difficult conditions, placing pressure on local communities, animal welfare organisations, and veterinary services. Spaying is one of the most humane and effective ways to address this issue. By preventing unwanted litters, spaying helps reduce the number of dogs living on the streets, improves the health and wellbeing of female dogs, lowers the risk of certain diseases, and contributes to a more sustainable and compassionate approach to animal welfare. Supporting spaying programmes in Sri Lanka plays a vital role in creating healthier communities for both people and animals while helping to reduce suffering and homelessness among dogs.
Emergency Treatments
Through emergency veterinary treatment, we help alleviate suffering and promote healing, recovery, and wellbeing for street dogs facing distress, injury, illness, and unnecessary pain across Sri Lanka. Many street dogs live without access to routine veterinary care and are vulnerable to road traffic accidents, untreated infections, skin diseases, malnutrition, parasites, and injuries caused by abuse or neglect. Without intervention, conditions that could be easily treated often become life-threatening, leading to prolonged suffering and a reduced quality of life.
Our link to a dedicated veterinary surgery allows us to access emergency treatment and vaccinations quickly for dogs in need, ensuring they receive prompt assessment, pain relief, wound management, medication and surgery when required.
Beyond treating individual cases, emergency veterinary care plays a vital role in improving the overall welfare of street dog populations. Without support, pet owners may be forced to delay or forgo essential treatments, leaving animals at risk of unnecessary pain, illness, and suffering.
Our financial support helps bridge this gap by contributing towards veterinary care, medical treatments, emergency procedures, medications, and other welfare-related needs for animals whose owners are unable to meet the full cost of care.
